While there were a few successful movies at the box office last year, 2014 was widely considered a letdown by most moviegoers.

But 2015 looks to be a promising year with a number of major movies slated to hit theaters that have established fan bases already in place, thus generating a great deal of excitement. So we highlight four movies that we believe are the most anticipated in the year to come.

[Sidenote: This list probably would have made more sense in January, but flow with us. We’re going to make this work.]

4. “Fifty Shades of Grey”

Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) is a literature student who goes to interview powerful and wealthy entrepreneur Christian Grey (Jamie Dorman). Their initial encounter eventually leads to a surprising yet passionate affair between the two that will change their lives.

The film is based on the best-selling book of the same name, which has sold 100 million copies worldwide. If the global interest in the book is any indication of the expected turnout for the movie, then people will flood to theaters to watch Steele and Grey heat up the big screen. The steamy romance/drama directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson is set to hit theaters on Feb. 13, right in time for Valentine’s Day.

3. “Jurassic World”

The park is open and is now a fully-realized entertainment destination featuring scientific creations of pre-historic wonder. But declining attendance forces the creation of a new attraction that threatens the safety of everyone.

Last year may have a down year at the box office overall, but not for Chris Pratt, who starred in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and did voice work for the lead character of “The Lego Movie,” arguably the two most successful movies of the year. Now he returns to breathe new life into the Jurassic Park franchise that awed audiences upon its introduction 22 years ago. “Jurassic World” arrives on June 10.

2. “Avengers: Age of Ultron”

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) attempts to re-start a peacekeeping program with the hopes of making the world safer without the need for heroes. He ultimately creates Ultron (voiced by James Spacer), a highly intelligent and nearly indestructible robot to fight on the side of good. But Ultron views humans with contempt and seeks to completely eliminate the entire human race instead.

It’s been three years since Earth’s mightiest heroes last gathered on the big screen en route to earning more than $1.5 billion worldwide. Marvel has been on a roll with its cinematic universe, and the Avengers are the biggest draw. That momentum will likely continue when “Age of Ultron” arrives on May 1.

1. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”

Plot details are still sparse, but J.J. Abrams sits at the helm of the seventh installment of the Star Wars franchise, which will continue the saga created by George Lucas and captivated a generation of moviegoers. However, we do know that Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will be reprising their roles as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, respectively.

You’re probably thinking that this movie’s position in the No. 1 spot was given away by the photo above, but let’s be honest, we all knew the newest entry into the beloved Star Wars universe would be the most anticipated movie of 2015. The franchise has a devoted army of fans who are eager to rid their minds of the disastrous prequels, and the anticipation has already reached a fever pitch ahead of the Dec. 17 premiere.

As always, we would like to know your thoughts as well. So let us know your top four list in the comment section.
