LeBron James returned to his hometown of Akron, OH on Sunday (Sept. 27) to introduce the Lebron 13, his latest signature shoe with Nike Basketball.

It’s fitting that James returned to his hometown to unveil the new shoe, as the design draws inspiration from his Northeast Ohio roots. Such inspiration is reflected in five locations of each colorway:  the top of the tongue, tongue embellishment, heel tab, Swoosh graphic and inside heel.

As for performance, Nike is once again using the tagline “Built for Explosiveness” to encapsulate the shoe’s defining features. The upper consists of breathable mesh and Flywire technology for a secure, adaptive fit. The Hyperposite material is intended to provide durability, support and protection, while maintaining flexibility.

For cushioning, the hexagonal Zoom Air units from the LeBron 12 return, albeit updated for better performance. The outsole sports four total Zoom Air units, two of which are 13 millimeters thick (larger than those in the previous sneaker) and are located in the heel and the ball of the foot, respectively. The two smaller units are placed in the forefoot at pressure points.

Nike has named the first colorway “Written in the Stars,” which pays tribute to James’ perseverance and dedication to his craft. It will be available in China on Oct. 1 and globally on Oct. 10. An “Away” colorway is slated for release just in time for the kickoff of the NBA regular season on Oct. 27.
