Twentieth Century Fox released the official trailer for “The Revenant” Tuesday (Sept. 29), shedding light on the conflict that lies at the heart of the intense survival epic.

“The Revenant” teams Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy with Academy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu (“Birdman”), who also co-wrote and produced the film based on Michael Punke’s novel of the same name.

The story follows explorer Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) and his hunting group during an expedition through the unforgiving American wilderness. But when a brutal bear attack leaves Glass clinging to life, he is buried alive and left for dead by his confidant-turned-enemy John Fitzgerald (Hardy). Driven by grief and anger, Glass embarks on a perilous journey seeking revenge.

The film is already generating a sizeable amount of Oscar buzz, primarily due to the cinematography from Emmanuel Lubezki (“Birdman,” “Gravity”). The film was shot in Canada using natural light and an advanced ARRI Alexa 65 6K camera, which allows for a wider dynamic range.

“The Revenant” arrives in select theaters on Christmas Day before a wide release on Jan. 8, 2016. Check out the trailer below and let us know our thoughts in the comment section.
