Twentieth Century Fox released the official trailer for “Hidden Figures,” the untold true story of how three brilliant African-American women working at NASA – Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) – helped propel America to the stars with mathematics.
The trailer begins with a young Johnson displaying her mathematical prowess, prompting her teacher to tell her parents “I’ve never seen a mind like the one your daughter has. You have to see what she becomes.”
What she eventually became was one of the great minds behind the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a monumental feat that turned the tide of the Space Race. Johnson, whose decorated career with NASA lasted from 1953 to 1986, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom last year.
The film was directed by Theodore Melfi and based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s upcoming book “Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race.” The film also stars Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst and Jim Parsons.
Check out the trailer below and mark your calendars for the film’s Jan. 13, 2017 release.
