June 15 marked the five-year anniversary of the release of J. Cole’s mixtape, “The Warm Up.” To celebrate the occasion, Cole sat down with Sway Calloway for “RapFix Presents: J. Cole’s The Warm Up-5 Years Later” and finally premiered the video for “Lights Please.”
The song was a standout from the mixtape and one that Cole cherishes and remains a fan favorite at shows.
“When I did it, I was like ‘Oh, I just turned the corner as a song writer,'” he told Sway. “This is the best thing I’ve ever done.”
During the interview, the Roc Nation MC explained that the visuals for “Lights Please” were originally shot in August 2008, alongside “Lost Ones” and “Simba.” The idea was for the three videos to come together to tell one story.
So, why did it take this video so long to see the light of day?
“The Lights Please video, even though it’s dope because I know people want to see it, in my eyes it didn’t reach the level of greatness that those other ones did,” Cole said. “But it’s still dope.”
